Sabi nga ng The Plump Pinay, let us all be heroes in our own little way.

Paalala lang po, wag naman po sanang magbibigay ng wedding gown at cocktail dress sa mga nasalanta. Mahirap pong maglakad sa baha pag naka-gown. (sarcastic ako dito) Salamat po.

Back to School!!!!

Getting ready to cover my son's books and notebooks

When I was still a student, one of the things I look forward to was going shopping with my family for school necessities.  We'd shop around the second week of May each year to avoid the long lines in cashiers and our favorite venue was National Bookstore in Harrison Plaza.

Of course, one's school needs aren't complete without the requisite notebooks. I have always loved covering notebooks and books and when I graduated from college, I usually offered my friend/relative/kumare-in-the-future (Mukmik) to cover her notebooks.

Now that I am a mother, I relish covering my little one's books and notebooks and I am quite happy with the available materials these days that weren't available in my time:  (Hindi na ganun kahirap magcover ng libro at kwaderno!)

1. Color-coded notebooks.

Hindi na kailangan ng art paper para gawing red ang cover!

A lot of schools require that notebooks are color-coordinated by subject. These notebooks are extremely handy for parents who have grade-schoolers since they no longer have to first cover the notebooks in specific colored art papers before covering them in plastic.   (Diba, hindi na doble-doble ang pagbabalot)

2.  Notebooks with handy information.

Handy info at the back of each notebook

I remember I chose notebooks with the multiplication and division guide, or those with the table of periodic elements, etc.   My little one's school gave him notebooks with the lyrics of the "Lupang Hinirang" written at the back.  Now, ain't that nice. At least the little kids will have a guide when singing of the national anthem during flag ceremony. (Hindi na sila mang-iimbento ng lyrics)

For kids and parents - para wala nang mag-iimbento ng lyrics

3. Plastic Covers that are pre-cut in various sizes and could just be slipped in notebooks or books.

Hmm... I haven't bought these yet, because I think they are too expensive.  But for parents who have very little spare time, this one is really very convenient, but more expensive than the regular plastic wrappers that are bought per meter.

Sakto Diba?

I also appreciate that there are plastic covers that would fit in normal sized-testbooks  (Hindi na sila super haba na para kang may hawak na curtain rod sa malayo kapag bumili ka sa bookstore).  I find that this cut saves on plastic covers (hindi na masyadong maaksaya) and, it's not too hard to cut anymore.  Imagine cutting a plastic cover that is the length of one meter or so (minsan tabingi na ang gupit diba, tapos pagsukat natin, bitin na pala sa isang libro; sayang!)

Oh the fun of going back to school after months of vacation (with the help of newly-developed prodcuts) ... I hope my little one enjoys this school year while learning... a lot.

By the way, I saw this logo in this notebook -

--- Tama, let's buy Pinoy products so that our children will become aware that some Filipino-made products are at par or even much better than imported products.

Happy school year everyone!!!

The Right of Suffrage

Long settled is the principle that the right to vote is not merely a right but also a privilege.  It is also a duty.  Hence, all Filipinos who are qualified must exercise this privilege.

According to Article IV of the 1987 Constitution, the following are qualifications of voters:

1.Citizens of the Philippines
2. at least 18 years old
3. residents in the Philippines for at least one year and residency for 6 months at least in the place where they intend to vote
4.not disqualified by law to vote

See, not all are entitled to vote in the elections. So if you are a registered voter, you are privileged, so exercise it, fight for it. Your chosen candidate/s may not win but that is the essence of a democratic and republican country.

As in life, we do not always win, but the important thing is we did our part.

So please vote on May 13, 2013.

Citizenship Requirement in Running for Public Office

According to the 1987 Philippine Constitution, these are the citizenship requirements for various elective posts in the government:

President and Vice - President - Natural-Born Citizen
Senator and Members of the House of Representatives - Natural-Born Citizen
Governor and Vice Governor -Filipino Citizen, whether natural-born or naturalized
Other Provincial  Officials, City or Municipal Officials - Filipino Citizen, whether natural-born or naturalized
Barangay Officials - Filipino Citizen, whether natural-born or naturalized

A natural-born Filipino citizen is one who does not have to do anything to acquire or perfect his citizenship.  upon birth, he or she is already a Filipino.

A naturalized Filipino citizen is one who complies with requirements set by the laws of the Philippines to become its citizen. So he/she has to follow the naturalization process before he/she becomes a Filipino.

Why the distinction?   It is the belief that a person who is natural-born is more inclined to take care of the public office he/she holds and of the country.  Some would argue otherwise.  But that's the law... for now.

Chivalry is in the ICU

I remember a post I made in my other blog many years ago about a very unfortunate evening.  It also opened my eyes to the death of chivalry in the Philippines.  In that post, endangered pa lang ang chivalry in my eyes. Ngayon, parang nasa ICU na.

Since I'm a regular commuter, and a frequent rider of LRT and MRT (all the lines, take note), I have seen several men who gave up their seats for ladies and senior citizens.  Even some ladies give up their seats for pregnant women, women with a child/children and senior citizens.

Pero mas marami ang hindi na nagpapaupo ngayon.

Take this one instance.  I was given a seat by another girl because I think at that time, I looked pale and was nauseous. She probably saw me and offered her seat. When she stood up, another girl from who-knows-where appeared and took the seat.  Ang nakakainis, she was younger and much slimmer than me.  (Neng, pagod ka din ba?)  We all stared at her. She was "deadma" until one lady said, "Ms. binigay sa kanya yang upuan na yan " (pointing to me). Since I didn't want her to be humiliated so much, I just told her to go on and remain seated. She didn't budge and so remain seated on my "pwesto".

Then last Friday, I took the train to Recto.  And look what I saw:

Nakakacross legs pa ang kuya sa dulo.

At ang isa ay tulug-tulugan.

Samantalang three women kaming nasa harap nila, and the two were almost senior citizens.

Hay!

Oh well, times are a-changing. Sabi nga nila, we women ask for equality. That includes seats on commuter vehicles.

Pero sana, wag naman itong i-apply sa senior citizens, pregnant women and those with children.
